COMMEMORATION OF THE WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY.

Today being May 3rd, the world marks World Press freedom day. This is a day dedicated to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The day was first established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation made by the UNESCO's General Conference in 1991.

It serves as an occasion to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend the media from attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in their various lines of duty.

Each year, the day is marked by a theme that reflects current issues and challenges faced by journalists and the media globally. The theme for World Press freedom day 2023 is "Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights”

We hope that this day will enlighten the public of the challenges journalists in Kenya face especially over the past few months, right from claims over biasness during the August 2022 general elections to being attacked and injured during the ongoing protests organized by Azimio leaders.
